Dear Prospective Board Member:

Thank you for considering becoming a board member of the Friends of the Alaska State Library, Archives and Museum (FoSLAM.org). The Friends, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization, is dedicated to connecting people to Alaska’s diverse history, art and cultures by supporting the Alaska State Library, Archives and Museum. We celebrated fifty years of service in May 2018.

According to our bylaws, the FoSLAM Board of Directors shall have eleven (11) directors each serving three (3)-year terms on a rotating basis, up to a maximum of nine (9) years. Prospective nominees must be current members of the Friends organization, attend one board meeting before joining the board, and submit a letter of interest and a resume or brief biography with current contact information. These documents will describe why you wish to serve on the FoSLAM board, what skills and relevant experiences you bring, and what committees or areas of interest will make your service fulfilling to you and beneficial to the organization. Board members will be chosen on the basis of skills and balance needed for effective board functioning.

The Friends of the Alaska State Library, Archives and Museum Board is an active board of volunteers who receive no salary for their service. Our reward comes from behind-the-scenes work with library, archives and museum staff members and from our personal contributions to the present success and future security of three important cultural institutions—our state library and historical collections, archives and museum.

We support these institutions in diverse ways. We purchase artifacts, books, maps and art for the library, archives and museum. We host First Friday and other artist/author receptions and pay artist, author, and workshop presenter honoraria. We sponsor Youth Activity Grant-funded workshops for children on first Saturdays October through May. We offer the Ethel Montgomery scholarship or internship for Alaska Native Students in library or museum studies. We sponsor an annual Mask-erade Ball fundraiser and APK (Andrew P. Kashevaroff building) Marketplace for authors and artists during Public Market in November. We advocate for statewide museum grants and contribute to Juneau’s annual legislative reception. During the Covid pandemic, we are fundraising to purchase an Alaska Native-designed face mask made by Lily Hope. We are always on the move.

The Friends ask our board members to commit to the following:

  • Respect, uphold and model the State Library, Archives and Museum’s bylaws, processes, values and commitments
  • Serve on two committees per year
  • Participate in fundraising and public relations activities
  • Attend at least nine board meetings each year (Three unexcused absences within one year, may, at the discretion of the Board, be deemed a resignation, according to the bylaws).

If you would like to share your talents and time in support of the Alaska State Library, Archives and Museum by serving on the board, please email your letter of interest and your resume to fredriksson@gci.net, or mail these documents to Friends of the Alaska State Library, Archives and Museum at PO Box 22421, Juneau, Alaska, 99802. Board members will meet with prospective members to discuss your areas of interest and answer questions. Please consult this website, and our Facebook page to learn more about our activities.

Board members bring enthusiasm and expertise to a friendly, dedicated team of volunteers and staff members. We’d love to have you join us.
